Stuart pearce to consider rewarding Sterling

: Sterling on the rise: Liverpool's young ace in line for Pearce call

Stuart Pearce is considering rewarding Raheem Sterling's exciting progress by including the Liverpool winger in his next England Under 21 squad.

Sterling made an impressive first Barclays Premier League start against Manchester City on Sunday following a man-of-the-match performance on his full debut at Hearts in the Europa League.

The 17-year-old was picked six days ago for the England Under 19 squad to face Germany in Hamburg next week but Pearce is giving serious thought to selecting Sterling for the European Championship qualifiers against Azerbaijan and Norway.

His form has already forced Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers to revise his pre-season view that Sterling would benefit from being sent out on loan.

Rodgers said: 'I have seen a lot of development in him in a short time. He takes on a lot of the concepts and he is very good with instructions. Normally wingers want to do their own thing but, tactically, Raheem is improving every day.

'I am certain over the next few years he will develop into a very good footballer. We just have to make sure we keep the pressure off him. Those sorts of games (in the Europa League) are good for him. But he certainly won't be going on loan.'

Liverpool, meanwhile, are bracing themselves for bad news about midfielder Lucas Leiva, amid fears he is facing a lay-off that will run into months rather than weeks
