A hat-trick and Man-Of-The-Match performance by the Premiership's hottest property, Jermaine Defoe, lit the beginning of international football after the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Defoe, terrorized de Bulgarians defence, inflicting a sour defeat to dent their Euro 2012 qualification.
England dominated a generally boring match. Harry Redknapp will savour the Defoe form and rue the injury that befell him and team-mate, Michael Dawson. Sir Alex Ferguson would have loved to see Wayne Rooney score. As it turned out, he fired blanks and may be venting his anger on the Premiership goalkeepers soon.
John Terry and Frank Lampard were missing and they were not actually missed. It must be said Bulgaria is no longer the team that was led by Hristo Stoichkov about 16 years ago. They looked like a school team and England should not pat themselves much on the back.
Theo Walcott had a good match and one can only hope it further boosts his amazing start in the 2010/11 league.
