Does Highlanders F.C Bosso really need sponsorship? I do not think so

In the advent of financial hardship in the game of football and life in general, every penny's value can never be over emphasised. The art of the begging bowl has been mastered by the unfortunate mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, who pose in street corners and traffic lights asking for 'Help' or 'Uncedo'.

More often than not, I found myself sympathetically supporting those 'causes'. I have since stopped that act, as I became more generous and more reasonable. One cannot continue to sponsor and promote such a life style.

Few weeks ago, Highlanders F.C played Dynamos F.C at Barbourfields Stadium. And not for the first time, nor the second, nor the third, nor the fourth, there was crowd violence and the match was abandoned.

The match against F.C Platinum saw violent scenes and teargassing of fans by police. This article will not discuss the merits and/or demerits of the police or match officials in both cases or any case for that matter.

One can be rest assured that whether Bosso plays Dynamos, Tsholotsho,Chapungu or whoever, the referee appointed by the powers that be, will come and do a job he is hired for; either to be neutral, to rob Bossolona or whatever.

It must be born in mind too, that the overzealous policemen will also be ever available with sponsored teargas canisters. With all due respect, on each match day, alcohol will be there and will be consumed, usually to excess.

By the way, even a neutral referee on a good day will mess up, not once. What happens after the messed up affair, needs to be taken into context. How can the referee fix his fracas? How much chance and time does he have? Will players and fans give him that chance? Even if he cannot, can players fix it by defending/attacking better? They must, they are paid for that.

In many of these occasions, the general view of the Bossolonians and the neutrals, is that 'we was robbed'. Fair and fine, if that be the case, how does ensuing actions assist the fans and the club? If any activities by the referee or the police are a bait, Mantengwane seem to be a good fish.

Take the Bosso/Dembare issue, the matter saw the Disciplinary Committee (DC) sit and found Highlanders guilty, meting out a USD4000 fine and match forfeiture at a 3-0 scoreline.

This is where I have issues, the USD4000 cash How far can this amount assist the club, and who is it going to assist? Probably a loan to Dynamos for the next match against Highlanders. 3-0 scoreline, can be recovered but how many seasons have goal differences and single points cost the team the titles? Another point for another day.

Soon after the abandonment that ill-fated match against Dynamos, fans embarked on a noble cause of action dubbed 'ASIFUNI BUMBULU'. Part of that campaign entailed each fan with 'black and white blood' in their veins to raise one USD in anticipation of the fine.

A certain amount has been raised already and will probably be (or has been) handed over to the club, maybe not all the USD4000. This must be commended in terms of the efficiency and commitment to pay over USD2000 in the said time.

Now, here is another issue. What do sponsors say if the brand they associate with gets dragged into mud at the swinging of the bait by the powers that be (football or political)? These sponsors know that sooner or later, Bosso will play Dembare and that the same referee (with a different mask) will be there. They know the same policemen will be there. It is a storm brewing. They ask themselves if the deal is worth it.

I have always wondered how much fines Bosso paid in 20 or 10 years. And there is no team with a better record. Then factor in the club's debt; how much in the red is the club? Sad.

If it takes such a short time to raise that much money, let it be done regularly (monthly, quarterly) and pay the debts of the clubs. If the Zimbabwe Football Association funds get low, I have no doubt who they bank on for at least USD2000: the Bosso fans. They call them 'hooligans' or 'hoolies'.

Could it be the reason why they make sure they appoint the referees to promote their cause, and penetrate the police force to respond to these matches? I am financially savvy to cease a money making opportunity. It is not rocket science.

This is not to mean that Bossolonians must accept nonsense and to be push overs, but never ignore one fact; when a good referee makes a decision, he always thinks it is correct. If turns out to be wrong, it can never be reversed unless he has time to do so. Does he have that time?

When the decisions go against Highlanders, there is a drunk fool who will scream, shout and even jump onto the pitch or fight. When that happens, a sponsored policeman with cheap teargas and a button stick (and a dog too) will enjoy the mayhem. He becomes relevant in the equation.

The USD1 or USD10 you worked hard for, will be used to pay ZIFA debts or to sponsor their lifestyles at the expense of your family or team. If you are a true Bosso fan, would you work for Dynamos or Highlanders? To me, paying the USD1 towards 'ASIFUNI BUMBULU' is sponsoring the system of oppression and indiscretion. Let us pay it now but know where it is going.

One must find ways to refuse discrimination and psychological abuse at matches besides the violence. So far, Harare can bank on Bosso 'fans' going on a rampage if they lose or concede against Dembare.
I am sure they have an annual budget of the fines paid by Highlanders. They bank on it 100%. It is their free sponsorship. Sponsors will flee this brand and maybe the fans should actually sponsor the Highlanders themselves instead. Any more companies coming on board become a bonus.

Be wise tsotsi, be streetwise. Vuka kleva. Bosso cannot be the masters of the art of a begging bowl sponsoring Dembare and ZIFA at the expense of its own glory.

Highlanders were duped by Dynamos

In a very clear case of trickery and manipulation, Dynamos dribbled Highlanders and the Premier Soccer League of Zimbabwe in a single swipe of artistry synonymous with the female ZIFA bosses gone by. A simple and swift case of 'tsamaya, 'shibobo', 'show me your number' and 'tsipa', the Glamour Boys left Bosso and the PSL wondering what hit them. After Bosso travelled to Harare for a BancABC semi-final replay fixture at the National Sports Stadium, Dembare refused to kick off.

The match followed the one in which Dynamos took the law into their own hands and walked off the field after a penalty was awarded to Highlanders, and then Bosso reciprocated the gesture. The equalising act ended in the dark and the match was abandoned. The many other stories and issues resulted in a committees entrusted to make football decisions. The Arbitration sub-Committee with a football mentality awarded the match to Dynamos with a 3-0 scoreline.

Highlanders broke protocol by taking a football matter to a court of law, disregarding the ad-hoc committee mandate to have their ruling 'appeal proof'. BancABC threatened to quit football altogether. After frantic efforts by the PSL to try to save the sponsor who is threatening to pull out and with good reason, Dynamos pledged to honour the remaining 9 minutes of the match. Bosso said that Dembare would play themselves for 9 minutes. What goes around comes around.

The court ruling was that the final to be played between the other semi-final winner, Caps United, should not go ahead and that the matter should be exhaustively finalised. As if to compromise, Dynamos agreed to play the match for the good of the game and to save the sponsor. Highlanders thought they prevailed and were also willing to participate in that replay.

With due respect to the law of the territory in which the dispute is taking place, the PSL schedules the match for a neutral venue to take away any form of advantage that may arise and cause the discontent by either party. The match was then penciled for the Baghdad Stadium. Enjoying the new brotherhood of their old rivalry, they both entered an agreement witnessed by the devil, to move the match to Harare. This marriage which Bosso thought was made in heaven was actually made in hell by a Dynamos vampire. Bosso were screwed full time as they had to travel to Harare thinking they will play in that beautiful game that Dynamos knew were taking everyone for a ride. And what a ride for the Bosso players and fans.

The moral of the story; 1. Never appeal an 'appeal proof' decision. It costs money and travel time. It chases away football sponsors. 2. Do not make a pact with a devil from the north. He will dump you and laugh at you for your stupidity, and you will have a lot of travelling alone while that devils is basically home. If a crazy teams walks out at BF, never walk-out and have your fans go hey waya. A committee will award the offender a 3-0 scoreline. 3. If the devil ask your balls in marriage, say NO. He has an ace up his sleeve, more so, will laugh you to scorn until the cows come home.

Hats off to the PSL for the way they tried to do football the football way and shame to Bosso for bringing themselves to this shameful position to start with. Once beaten, I hope never beaten again as Mr Cooper is doing a fantastic job. He must regroup and forget the psychological warfare the Harare team are tyring to play because there is a lot of money in the ZAOGA Jubilee. As for Dynamos, they are dirty squirrels with players involved in dirty money of the Far East in their "national team" duties. They are trying to pull a fast one and of course, you can see how efficiently they pulled off this one that they are pro.

What is next in football in Zimbabwe? They have done everything.

Highlanders Needed This Win Badly, More Than Dynamos.

[caption id="attachment_1607" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Coach Fathi (mis)lead The Team Off The Pitch Against Dynamos."][/caption]The Bosso versus Dembare BancABC Cup semifinal's fate that was played and abandoned is yet to be decided. Highlanders messed up a match they should have won. They needed to win and badly. The $40 000,00 winners' cheque would have poured cold water on the very bad debts the Executive has been patching from their pockets.

The Ernest Maphepha management left huge sums to be paid after they travelled to Sudan for a CAF assignment. As we speak, The Chronicle reports that Bosso were making frantic efforts to avoid attachment of property last night by the Deputy Sheriff over a US$4 000 debt, which the club owes to Vusumuzi Dube. "The money is part of interest accrued and legal fees from the total debt of US$36 000. The club have since cleared the actual debt." reports The Chronicle.

Dynamos can do with a coin or 2 but they are playing Champions' League football. They do not owe anybody much. If they owed as much as Bosso, still, they have the opportunity to fight harder in the Africa Champions' League, where they can access a $1 000 000,00. So while it was careless on their part to be stupid, Highlanders could not afford the same mistake. Dembare may decide to win the Championship again as they have a realistic chance of doing so. As for Bosso, let us leave that one alone.

The report says the money came from club members who paid their US$5 monthly subscriptions, to whom I applaud the efforts and encourage all other fans and supporters to dig deeper into their pockets and rescue the team. "Some was raised through the SMS fund-raising method as well as from donations from members and sponsors, Karcher".

Things are now so bad that there seems to be no way out. Themba Ndlela's executive have been everywhere doing everything but with less success. While it can not be guaranteed the stance the legal practitioners of those that Bosso owe the money, winning this Banc ABC Cup would have given leverage for negotiation by the Bosso legal team, to prevent the property attachment.

Highlanders FC deserves all the sympathy, looking at the circumstances under which they sank into debt, but the team shot themselves in the foot when they let the 40 grand slide through their fingers (feet in this case) like wet fish. I am not a believer in luck but God works with those who fight. There was a still a fighting chance, which was within Bosso's reach and capacity when the coach ordered the team to leave the pitch.

Those who watched the match feel that Highlanders were under pressure from Dembare. They do not think Bosso could have turned the tables on The Glamour Boys. Fair enough, given the debts and the loss of the semi-final

Asking for the fine from PSL and bringing the game of football into disrepute may have been better than rain of sulphur and brimstone, but who said it was going to rain anything?

Have you made your contributions to help the team out and how?

Of Highlanders and Dynamos, Who's Fooling Who?

Dynamos beat Highlanders FC in a semi-final and the Premier Soccer League wants to sit and decide whether the win is a win or not. They may decide to play the remaining 17 minutes of the match not completed due to bad light.

What a big shame to the beautiful game of football. The two giants of Zimbabwean football were involved in a BancABC Sup8r semi-final at BF over the weekend, in which the unsightly ugly scenes were the order of the day.

It was a concoction of incompetence, stupidity and ignorance that embraced the occasion, with a million excuses and blames flying everywhere.

Highlanders FC of Bulawayo and Dynamos FC of Harare have always been involved in heated encounters which sometimes begot violence. It would be either the fans or the rarely, the players.

On this occasion, the match was played and Dembare took the lead in the 36 minute through Eddie Mashiri. In the 69th minute Bosso were awarded a penalty after Dynamos’ defender Guthrie Zhokinyu felled Francis Kanda, by the referee, Bryton Malandule .

The not so clever Dynamos players mobbed the assistant referee Abraham Manda seeking the reversal of the decision. Dynamos’ goalkeeper Washington Arubi is said to have centre-finger gestured at the Bosso supporters at the Soweto stand. The Soweto crowd accepted the invitation the way they know how, by throwing all sorts of debris onto the pitch.

The Mbare boys walked off the pitch to their dressing room in protest as the skirmishes swelled. They are reported to have swanked into their casual gear and left the dressing rooms. About 30 minutes later they got into their football kit and went into the pitch and play resumed. The penalty was taken and missed when Arubi dived to his right to save Gilbert Banda’s effort. Dynamos were awarded a penalty of their own.

It is said that Bosso coach Mohamed Fathi ordered a walk-out in a revenge protest. This emotional decision was ill-informed. Even as Bosso came in 30 minutes later to complete the fixture, it was too dark to continue with play and the match ended with Dynamos leading 1-0, therefore deserving to progress to the finals.

According to Acting PSL CEO, Kennedy Ndebele, there was supposed to be a 90 minute match to decide the finalist of the BancABC Cup. In case of a draw in 90 minutes, extra time would be played and eventually penalties to decide a winner on the day.

There has been calls for the match to be played on a neutral venue to decide who will play Caps United in the final. Isaac Mbedzi called on the coaches to pull this one for the sake of fair play and the paying public. Liqhwa Gama had this to say, "I hate to say it but Dembare is through to the next round or is it the final!!"

Both clubs acted in childishly and blamed the referee for failing to handle the game, which may be true. If the robbed a bank because they saw the referee do it, they thought they would escape the jail term by saying the referee started it. Wow, what a mature people we have here.

The Bosso family must actual feel they robbed themselves as they could have played and won the game regardless of all they faced. They may have scared off any potential sponsors who want to associate with excellence and discipline. The team will surely pay a huge fine, adding to their unpaid bills and over  $200 000,00 debts.

Do you think it is the Coach's duty to order players to break rules?
